When they settled here more than a thousand years ago, the Norse promptly named Reykjavík for the steam from its geothermal hot-springs. Having utilised them mainly for washing though the centuries, it wasn’t until 1930 that the townsmen and women developed a way to pipe the water from the boiling springs into their homes for heating. That revolutionised life in the town of about 30,000 people that was emerging as the midpoint of habitation in Iceland. At the time, Icelanders were among the poorest nations in Europe, for sure economically and probably some other aspects as well. Affordable geothermal district heating made a lot of difference for the people living just south of the Arctic Circle. Energy poverty was gradually eliminated with improved health, to which continuous roll out of public geothermal swimming pools also generously contributed.
